Sport shooting in Australia spans precision rifle at 1000m, fast pistol on steel, and slow-fire bullseye. Most disciplines have an SSAA (Sporting Shooters Association of Australia) division — the SSAA is the easiest path in.
Disciplines at a glance
- F-Class — long-range bench rifle. Sub-MOA accuracy at 800–1000m.
- Service Rifle — practical rifle, mixed positions, 100–600m.
- IPSC / Practical Pistol — fast handgun on cardboard and steel.
- ISSF — Olympic-style precision pistol and rifle.
- Lever Action — Western-style cowboy action, growing fast.
- 3-Position Smallbore — .22 LR rifle, prone/kneeling/standing.
How to start
- Visit a club. Most run "Come and Try" days.
- Enrol in the relevant club discipline. For Cat H, this triggers the H-licence pathway.
- Buy used for your first six months — you'll learn what you actually want before spending on new.
