WA replaced its 51-year-old Firearms Act 1973 with a new framework. Key changes for licensed shooters.
Western Australia passed the Firearms Act 2024, replacing the long-standing 1973 Act. The new framework introduces:
- A capped number of firearms per genuine reason (the "firearms cap").
- Mandatory health checks for licence holders.
- Updated storage standards and inspection regime.
- A revised genuine-reason framework.
Implementation is phased; the WA Police Firearms Branch is publishing guidance as each provision commences.
